Romance in Second Life Ruins Marriage

I haven't been really checking other people's blogs so I apologize if someone already posted this article. The article is about a married couple who are in the process of getting a divorce due to the husband's Second Life avatar having a relationship with another woman.

The article struck me because of how virtual online worlds have become a venue for people to meet and to not only socially interact, but to emotionally connect with someone too. I just found the article interesting as the couple were not only married in the real world but were also married in Second Life. This was also not the first act of infidelity on the husband as well. The first time it happened the wife decided to divorce only in Second Life but stay together in the real world.

This is what fascinated me as how the wife made the distinction that their relationship was defined in both Second Life and in the real world. What intrigues me is where does that line end and where does it start to blur? The second time the husband was caught online in Second World with another woman the wife decided to end all things together and filed for divorce in the real world.

It amazes me how sites like these and other online virtual worlds provide ways for relationships to begin and foster. It is also surprising how these sites can also lead to the falling out of these relationships too. In the end, I just wonder on how great of an impact online virtual worlds have on real world relationships and what are the social impacts it has on society.

I was married for 25 years and my wife started playing second life. She created a virtual person and met many people on this game. She would sit in the basement every night having a few beers and meeting up with so called virtual friends in bars where they could dance and talk. I always thought she was building a relationship with someone but always denied it. I went as far as creating my own avitar on the upstairs computer and going to the bars she went to and try to catch her. After our marriage ended, she admited she was in a relationship with someone on the game and went to visit him after our separation. She said he was not his type and asked for forgiveness. I couldnt forgive her and moved on.
