As mentioned in a recent BBC article, Google acquired GrandCentral, a phone firm, many analysts were confused by the purchase in 2007. Yet this month, Google announced its new service "Google Voice," which allows users to make cheap international calls and also has an innovative new feature which converts voicemails into text that can either be sent to emails or your phone. This will take away the "chore" aspect associated with voicemails in this busy, high-tech world. Through this speech-to-text feature, Google hopes to gather more customers, and break out of the mold of an online search and advertising company. Although Google is only offering this service to former GrandCentral customers, it hopes to expand its network to future customers.
This is an extremely interesting concept as it has the possibility to eliminate voice mails. If released to new costumers it will be interesting to see if competes with the popular Skype.
