real money...fake land?

So in class the other day stevie asked what part of class really interested us or at least what did we learn. I think that most definitely the part that i found the most fascinating was the readings and talks about second life, and how people spend real world money on virtual goods and land. I can't begin to fathom what would make people do that?! I guess what i mean is that when you can buy real land and make an investment why would someone spend money buying virtual stuff? what is more interesting is that it does not seem to be an uncommon thing at all. A lot of people partake in this. So i don't know a lot about the economy and stuff... but if people are investing in virtual goods, that means it doesn't show up in our countries economy right? but, if it is such a popular activity and people are making so much money off of it, then shouldn't it be part of our economy?i definitely think that all these new games and sites online give people a lot to think about, and is going to lead towards reconstructing parts of our society in order to fully benefit from the advancing technologies that are around us.
