Research Project

Hullo, we're the group doing trolling. Trolling in class was called "griefing."
We'll be attempting to study how and why different people troll, where trolling takes place, and how this affects other users.
I've held off on posting about our group because due to the nature of our topic, we are bound to have some difficulties with our project.
A major problem we have is how to gain cooperation from the community. Since the ethics code prevents us from participating too much, most of our data would have to come from observation, and hopefully some interviews.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would start looking into forums and websites. You can then go from there. Specifically there are people in forums who will talk about griefing that they encountered. They will usually be more than happy to talk about their experiences if you want to post a thread about it. Depending on the forum that you post on, this will open the door for all types of griefing from trolls to player-killing. I'm not sure kosher it would be, but people usually also tend to share the screen names or account names of the griefers. You can try to contact the griefers and talking to them.

There are also some griefers who are a lot more open about it. There are guilds and videos online about griefing. You should be able to contact these people.

I did a quick search on google and I found these:
http://www.thegrief.org/news
http://www.nom-nom-nom.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=705
http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=126610
http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=180667

Also don't forget we have a reading on griefing.

I hope that helps some. You can always contact me if you want to bounce some idea about your topic. I'm actually pretty curious about your findings.

Agreed^ if you hang around a while, you'll probably start figuring out which users play which roles. People who are regulars in the community also tend to make references to past events and other users, so watch out for those comments OR watch out for people who seem to know about these (oldschool folks, senior members) and ask them about what you're looking for.
